Overview
These are brand new tables just for South America
showing how the arrival of the new Omicron
strains are affecting each location in 2022.
To view older data from 2021, go there.
To view newer data from April-June 2022, go there.
Below, you will find 2 tables:
1.  Weekly raw data (Go here)
2.  Weekly data scaled per 100,000 population (Go here)
My sources show that the new Omicron strains
have arrived world-wide.  A high death rate,
continues in some countries while it has declined
in others.  The Omicron strains have displaced the
other, more deadly strains of the Covid-19 virus.
Expectations based upon early research on Omicron
in South Africa was that deaths would go down,
but just the opposite occurred in the U.K., the
United States, and other western countries.  That
was before a surge in South Africa's death rate
in more recent weeks.  Now they are saying that
the higher death rate is tied to the huge increases
in the number of cases.
Statistics in the United Kingdom show that most
of the U.K.'s deaths from Omicron were among
those who also had one or more comorbidities
such as being overweight or having diabetes.
As Omicron spreads so quickly and so thoroughly
world-wide, many believe that it has become
endemic and thus unavoidable like the common
cold.  Since Omicron often has mild symptoms
that closely resemble the common cold, Omicron
may become yet another virus that can give people
a cold each year.  Even a common cold can be
deadly to someone already in poor health.
While people who had recovered from an earlier
strain of Covid-19 were being infected again by
the Omicron strain, the reverse was never true,
so Omicron seems to be providing protection
from those earlier strains.
A new Omicron strain, BA.2, that is thought to be
even more contageous has already surfaced, but
its symptoms were no worse than Omicron BA.1.
Check out my sources at the bottom of this webpage.
The arrival of Omicron is obvious when the
Change in Cases for a location jumps from
consistently low values to high values.  This
is often (but not always) followed by a rise or
drop in the Change in the number of Deaths.
The countries are ordered best (fewest Covid cases)
to worst (most Covid cases) using the latest infection
Cases numbers in the last column in the table --
Mar. 31, 2022.
These tables are a snapshot of 1 day per week
since January 6, 2022.  The "change" rows
are the changes in Cases or Deaths since the
previous week.
These tables are useful in noting trends.  Pay special
attention to the "change" rows, as comparing these
will help you to determine how quickly infections
and/or deaths are increasing.  An exceptionally
large increase is displayed in red.
Disclaimer:
Tables of data such as this are only as good as the
source of that data.  These tables merely reflect
what was reported.  Some locations are reporting
only once a week.
Red in the Cases change row
or the Deaths change
A red number in bold means this is the maximum
row means a significant change above normal, such
as going from a 3 digit number to a 4 digit number.
found in that category within this entire table.
The table below lists the Covid-19 infection rate
and deaths as raw data plus computed changes.

This table contains computed data.
The table below lists the Covid-19 infection rate
and deaths per 100,000 in population for the
mainland countries in South America.  I have
taken the number of Cases, divided that number
by the population, and multiplied the result by
100,000 to get the numbers in this table.  Similar
computations were done with the Deaths.  The
data is rounded up or down to the nearest integer
value.  The data used to make the computations
come from the table above, which comes from ...
https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html
The populations were found on the internet and
the values that I used can be viewed
here.
Red in the Cases row
means 20,000 (20%) or more Cases per 100,000 population.
Red in the Cases change row
means a significant change above normal,
Red in the Deaths row
means 250 or more Deaths per 100,000 population.
Red in the Deaths change row
means a change of +5 or more.
A red number in bold means this is the maximum
such as going from a 3 digit number to a 4 digit number.
found in that category within this entire table.
